The Safe Conflict Movement

The Safe Conflict Movement

The Safe Conflict Movement is a collective of people, organizations, philanthropists and businesses that have adopted a similar goal for their work: creating Safe Conflict. Through Synergizers and Peace Cooperates, the movement creates collaboration within the Conflict Transformation field to collectively take on large objectives.

Safe Conflict is any conflict that is non-violent, unarmed, and allows participants to adhere to their basic human rights. The Movement follows four tenants designed to turn long running weaknesses in the Peace and Security field into strengths.

Four Tenants of The Safe Conflict Movement

1) First is the shared goal of creating Safe Conflict.

“Peace” means something different to almost everyone. Without a common, measurable, definition of success it’s hard to tell if progress is being made across the field.

2) Second, the Movement uses standardized planning processes to generate action.

Without some standardization in determining what action is needed, conflicts and their symptoms are engaged haphazardly with no way to certify the work being done is effective, let alone necessary.

3) Third, the Movement is supported by a structured process to generate political will.

At the present, a lack of sustained, well informed political will and civic action prevents key stake holders from being influenced and competent peacemaking efforts from being supported. When harnessed, such political will has empirically been the key differentiator in successful peacemaking efforts from early Jewish non-violent protest against the Roman Empire up to the Civil Rights Movement.

4) Lastly, the Movement works to generate recurring collaboration with its participants.

An absence of structured collaboration with existing aid organizations has resulted in duplicated or contradictory efforts and missed opportunities to leverage knowledge, resources, and shared projects.
