An Invisible Problem

What if I told you that one of today's most appalling issues is something believed to have ended over one hundred years ago? What if I told you that something considered an abomination for hundreds of years is now being played out at a magnitude hundreds of times greater?

What if I told you that human slavery is one of today's most pressing issues? Between the years 1550-1800, approximately 500,000 slaves were brought from Africa to the United States, and we're sold at the equivalent of 40,000 USD per life. Now slavery has become globalized, and an estimated 800,000 individuals are trafficked per year. So what took 250 years to do in the past is now doubled in just one year, and what's more -- the average modern slave sells for 600 USD, 66 times cheaper than before. However, this isn’t a problem that we are doomed to endure – in fact it is a problem that some individuals are already striving to fix. This isn’t a problem about knowledge, it isn’t a problem about not being able to catch the perpetrators, it is a problem of attention – a problem of caring. In many of the countries where human trafficking is most prominent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) the life of a woman is simply not valued. However, with the help of a few dedicated organizations, along with your support, individuals across the world can finally be truly free.
