Efforts Toward a Conflict Free Community
Around the nation efforts had been made to create conflict free campuses, meaning campuses that do not purchase technology containing minerals coming from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where mineral profits are used to fund the conflict. Currently a similar effort is being made at the University of Colorado. In addition to looking at campuses as an avenue for change, a larger scope is taking place in Boulder to try to make the community conflict free. Efforts are being made to pass some form of a resolution at the community level issuing the support of Boulder companies and businesses for purchasing conflict free technology. While conflict free products are not currently available in the market due to the lack of transparent supply chains, by stating support for conflict free products the community can pressure businesses to pursue transparent supply chains so they will be able to make conflict free products. Lisa Friend, Sustainability Planner in Boulder Country, is looking into possibilities for creating a conflict free community.
