Columbia
Context:
Columbia's democratic government has been fighting organizations that started largely as communist groups since the 1950's. Without modern political motivation, the largest organization, the FARC, controls large swaths of the south and continue to use the drug trade and kidnappings to fund their actions. Several of Columbia's presidents have attempted various reforms to end the conflict, each with mixed results. Support for the Government and FARC is reasonably split amongst the population of Columbia, further complicating reconciliation.
What's keeping it going:
The FARC today identifies itself as a revolutionary force whose goal is to protect the people of Columbia from exploitation by foreign corporations, especially oil companies, and western American influence. Click here for more detail.
